Winter Wheat: The Mid-American Review Festival of Writing: Updated

This week, November 13-15, Mid-American Review will be hosting its 8th Annual Winter Wheat Festival on campus. Winter Wheat features a variety of events, including readings by Joe Mackall, Jane Mead, Hadara Bar-Nadav, Anna Leahy, Mary Biddinger, and Joe Meno. Friday features a State of the Art Symposium, covering many issues at the forefront of contemporary poetry. Saturday is the most active day, with a full-slate of workshops, sessions, and round-table discussions, flanked by a book fair that features representatives from many literary journals from the Midwest and beyond. The weekend ends with a dinner on Saturday evening.

Admission to Winter Wheat is free, though donations are always welcome. Teachers and instructors are encouraged to bring groups of students, at any level.

There’s still time to register for this weekend’s Winter Wheat: The Mid-American Review Festival of Writing. The registration table is located on the third floor of the Union (follow the signs). A note about your registration: Please be sure to attend the session that you’re signed up for, as your leader is counting on your presence. MAR has tried to accommodate first choices, and for the most part, was successful. Festival events take place in the Bowling Green State University Student Union:

Tonight (Thursday):

7:30 p.m., Union Theater (second floor; south side of building), reading by essayist Joe Mackall
reception and book sale to follow

Tomorrow (Friday):

10 a.m. to noon, Room 308 Union, Poetry Symposium, featuring Larissa Szporluk, Sandra Faulkner, Anna Leahy, and many other poets of note. Various poetry topics will be open for group discussion.

Noon to 1 p.m., Room 308 Union, Round table discussion about the uneasy relationship between MFAs and publishing, led by Megan Ayers. Any ideas about publishing in general are fair game for this open talk.

2 to 3:15 p.m., Third floor, Union (visit registration table in Third Floor lobby to get your folder for exact locations). First session. Late registrations welcome.

3:30 to 4:45 p.m., Third floor, Union. Second session.

7:30 p.m., Union Theater (second floor), reading by poets Jane Mead and Hadara Bar-Nadav
book sale to follow

Saturday:

8:15 to 9 a.m., Visit registration table in Third Floor lobby to pick up your folder, if you haven’t already; coffee and donuts available.

9 to 10:15 a.m., First session (see registration folder for individualized schedule)

10:30 to 11:45 a.m., Second session

12 to 1 p.m., lunch on your own (the Union has a food court for your convenience)

1 to 2:15 p.m., Third session

2:30 to 3:45 p.m., Fourth session

4 p.m., reading by poets Anna Leahy and Mary Biddinger, Union Theater

5 p.m., snacks (free) and cocktails (cash bar), Union Ballroom (second floor, north side)

6 p.m., Union Ballroom (north side), pizza dinner, followed by reading by Joe Meno. Open mic to follow.

Note to past participants: In previous years, we have hosted Sunday contemplative sessions; however, those will not be offered this year.
