Earlier this month Rhetoric & Writing doctoral program members Tina Arduini, Pauline Baird, April Conway, Ken Hayes, Amy Wrobel Jamison, Craig Olsen, and Aimee Taylor, Graduate students in the Rhetoric and Writing Program, hosted the 2nd annual 21st Century Englishes graduate student conference.  21st Century Englishes included presentations by students from around the country, including presenters from University of New Hampshire, Sam Houston State University in Texas, and California State University. There were also a number of Skype presentations, including one from a student presenting from Japan.

The conference program included a variety of approaches to answering the call about topics considering “21st Century Englishes.” Presentation topics ranged from critical explorations of Zadie Smith and E.M. Forster, to using social media in the composition classroom, to preparing ESL students for academic writing, to a presentation on rhetorical dialog between TV weather personalities and their viewers. The over forty attendees of the conference were also able to see Dr. Melanie Yergeau, assistant professor from University of Michigan, deliver her engaging keynote presentation on the topic of “Shiny Rhetorics”. Dr. Sue Carter Wood, Rhetoric & Writing program director, delivered closing remarks.
