Nerdcore Rising

The Culture Club, the Cultural Studies Scholars’ Association, extends an open invitation to attend the Gish Film Theater and Gallery in Hanna Hall Tuesday September 30th, for the regional debut of the film Nerdcore Rising, hosted as part of the Club’s Tuesday night film series.  Nerdcore Rising‘s director Negin Farsad will be on hand to speak about the film and will also be doing some stand up comedy before the film , as well as taking Q & A after the event.

The line forms at 5pm and the event will begin at 6pm.

Max Kade Writer in Residence Susanne Ayoub Reads From Her Work

As part of the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of BGSU’s Academic Year Abroad Program in Austria the Department of German, Russian and East Asian Languages is proud to welcome the Max Kade Writer in Residence Susanne Ayoub from Vienna, Austria. Dr. Ayoub will read from her work in both English and German on Thursday, September 25 at 7:30 p.m. in 101 Shatzel Hall (Conference Room).

Dr. Ayoub holds a Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in theater and art history, has published two novels in the genre of historical crime fiction, and she has also written plays and poems. She is active in theater and radio as an author and director and has recently made a film titled Baghdad Fragment that documents her return to the city of her birth before the Iraq war. (She moved from Iraq to Austria as a child.) She has won prizes for her poetry, drama, and film.

Susanne Ayoub’s Residency is made possible by; The Max Kade Foundation; The Department of German, Russian and East Asian Languages; The Chapman Community at Kohl; and The College of Arts and Sciences.

Xi’an International Studies University Exchange Meeting

An informational meeting and celebration of the International Exchange Program between Bowling Green State University and Xi’an International Studies University in China will be held Thursday, October 2, from 4:30-5:45 p.m in the East Hall Library Lounge (Room 219).

Fiction Writer Margot Singer Reads Her Work

Fiction writer Margot Singer will give a reading at Prout Chapel this Thursday (September 18 at 7:30 p.m.) as part of this semester’s ongoing Creative Writing reading series. Singer is the author of the story collection, The Pale of Settlement (University of Georgia Press, 2007), winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction and the 2008 Reform Judaism Prize for Jewish Fiction. Her short stories and essays have appeared in AGNI, Prairie Schooner, The Gettysburg Review, Shenandoah, The Western Humanities Review, The North American Review, The Sun, and many others. She is also the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Carter Prize for the Essay, and the Glasgow Prize for Emerging Writers. She is currently an Assistant Professor of English at Denison University, where she is the Bosler Endowed Faculty Fellow.

Fall Kick-Off

The entire Department of English community is invited to attend a Fall Kickoff reception on Friday, September 12, beginning at 4 p.m.

The event will be held in the East Hall Library/Lounge, located on the second floor, and light refreshments will be served.

The Fall Kickoff is a great opportunity to learn of the numerous activities planned by Department organizations in the coming weeks. Representatives from all of the Department’s student organizations will be present with updates on their activities and information on how to get involved. Organizations include the Black Swamp Literary Society, Sigma Tau Delta, the English Graduate Student Association, the Acolytes of the Smoking Jacket, the Graduate Writers Club, and Prairie Margins (the host of this semester’s event).

On behalf of all of the Department’s organizations, we hope to see you there!
