Digital Mirror Camp Continues for Second Year

Posted by bgsuenglish on June 18, 2008

2007 Digital Mirror CampThe success of last summer’s Digital Mirror Computer Camp for Girls has led to a $10,000 award from the national American Association of University Women (AAUW) Community Action Grant Program to extend the camp for the next two years. Grant recipients include Kris Blair, Jen Almjeld, Erin Dietel-McLaughlin, and Meredith Graupner.

This year’s Digital Mirror Camp, organized by the ICS Research Cluster Webbing Cyberfeminist Practices, is scheduled for August 6-9 and will feature two tracks, one for returning campers and one for new campers, for a total of 25 participants. Returning campers will not only extend skills developed last year in digital imaging and web-authoring but also serve as mentors to new campers, sharing their expertise with girls new to the latest techno-literacy tools. The four-day camp will also feature a fieldtrip to the Toledo Museum of Art, where the girls, mostly in grades 6-8, will have the opportunity to tour the museum and participate in a glass-blowing activity. The camp will conclude with a showcase session for parents to celebrate their daughters’ digital accomplishments during this residential experience, ultimately designed to foster and sustain their interest in technology. Other participants in this year’s camp include Suzan Aiken and Ruijie Zhao, both Rhetoric and Writing, along with Erin, Meredith, and Kris.

In addition to support from the national and local AAUW and the Department of English, the camp is sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Culture and Society, the College of Arts and Sciences, and also supported by BGSU’s School of Art and the Student Technology Center. The 2008 camp is already fully enrolled, with just a slot or two left. If you are interested in learning more about the Digital Mirror Computer Camp or in making a charitable contribution to the English Department to help sustain the camp, please contact Dr. Kris Blair, Department Chair, at 419-372-7540 or
