Four Seasons in Rome

Posted by bgsuenglish on June 15, 2007

Award winning fiction writer and Creative Writing alumnus Anthony Doerr (MFA 1999) is celebrating the publication of his latest book, Four Seasons in Rome: On Twins, Insomnia, and the Biggest Funeral in the History of the World. He writes:

My third book, nonfiction this time, is being published this week. As many of you know, on the same day Shauna (my wife) gave birth to our twins sons in 2004, we learned we’d won the Rome Prize, a literary award that would send us to Italy for a year. The new book, Four Seasons in Rome, describes our subsequent adventures in the eternal city, exploring piazzas and hill towns, not sleeping, attending the funeral of Pope John Paul II, and trying to figure out how to raise twin babies in a country where children are universally adored and ‘horse’ is a flavor of baby food.

Tony’s short story collection The Shell Collector (2002) won the Barnes & Noble Discover Prize, two O. Henry Prizes, the Rome Prize, the Ohioana Book Award, and was a New York Times Notable Book and an American Library Association Book of the Year. His novel About Grace (2004) was named one of the Best Books of 2004 by the Washington Post, won the Ohioana Book Award again, and was a finalist for the PEN USA fiction award.

You can win a copy of Four Seasons in Rome by taking the Pliny Challenge at The Morning News. Congratulations and best wishes to Tony and his family from all their friends here in Bowling Green.
