Posted by bgsuenglish on August 31, 2010

A new semester is underway, and a new series of Thursday evening Creative Writing gatherings will kick off September 2 with an open mic event at Prout Chapel hosted by the staff of Prairie Margins, BGSU’s undergraduate literary magazine. Bring a few poems or a 1-2-page excerpt of a story to share.

If you have questions or would like to submit a poem, short story or artwork to Prairie Margins, drop the staff an email at prairie@bgsu.edu.

Dr. Edgar F. Daniels 1921-2010

Posted by bgsuenglish on August 13, 2010

As we gear up for another busy semester here in the Department of English, we take a moment to pause and remember one of our own. Dr. Edgar F. Daniels, former Chair of the Department, passed away on August 5. Ed joined the Department in 1953 and served as Chair throughout the 1970s; he is remembered fondly by friends and colleagues for his many contributions to academic life. Following his retirement in 1980, Ed and his wife moved to Carmel, California.

In Carmel, Dr. Daniels took up art again – he had studied at the Dayton Art Institute – exhibiting at local galleries and creating post cards of Carmel landmarks. He served as a volunteer at the Carmel Foundation and was an active member of the Friends of the Harrison Memorial Library, participating in the weekly collection of donated books and the annual book sale. As an avowed Anglophile, he made frequent trips to England, as well as traveling to France, Germany, and Spain with his colleague from Bowling Green, Dr. Ralph Wolfe. He is survived by his son Scott Daniels, daughter-in-law Susan Novogratz Daniels, two grandsons, Thomas and Peter Daniels, and a granddaughter, Teresa Daniels. He was predeceased by his sister, Doris Havens. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers or other gifts, contributions be made to the Gish Film Theatre through the BGSU Foundation, Mileti Center, BGSU, Bowling Green, Ohio, 43403.
